Platinum Melting Furnace

High-temperature induction melting for platinum and palladium

Platinum Melting Furnace

COOLDO platinum melting furnaces are configured for platinum, palladium and compatible high-temperature precious-metal alloys. The CDO-FM16 to CDO-FM20 standard range covers 1–10 kg platinum batches. Crucible material, feed form, temperature measurement and pouring arrangement must be selected around the real metal and process rather than the kilogram rating alone.

What makes a platinum furnace different?

Platinum needs substantially higher process temperature than gold or silver. A suitable furnace therefore uses a high-temperature coil and power configuration, a compatible quartz or zirconia crucible, verified cooling and an appropriate temperature-measurement method. Feed form also matters: sponge, powder, clean scrap and solid pieces couple to induction differently and may need different charging practice.

High-temperature melting workflow

01

Confirm material

Identify platinum, palladium or alloy composition, feed form, purity and normal batch. Keep wet or contaminated material out of the crucible.

02

Select crucible

Choose quartz or zirconia from process temperature, chemical compatibility, contamination limits, service life and cost.

03

Melt and observe

Induction heating brings the charge to a fully liquid state. Electromagnetic bath movement supports uniform temperature and composition.

04

Pour safely

Use the integrated, manual-tilting or customized pouring structure matched to batch weight and prepared mold position.

Tilting structures are matched to loaded crucible weight, mold height and operator workflow.
Customized large batch handwheel platinum melting furnace
Larger high-temperature projects require a separately engineered furnace, pouring frame, crucible and cooling system.

Standard platinum melting furnace models

Model Power Platinum capacity Typical melting time Standard machine size
CDO-FM16 15 kW 1 kg 1–3 min 500 × 500 × 860 mm
CDO-FM17 20 kW 3 kg 2–4 min 500 × 500 × 860 mm
CDO-FM18 25 kW 5 kg 2–5 min 500 × 500 × 860 mm
CDO-FM19 30 kW 8 kg 3–8 min 500 × 500 × 860 mm

Capacity note: Published figures are model-selection references. Usable capacity and cycle time change with metal density, alloy, charge shape, safe crucible level, utilities and production method.

Crucible and process direction

Selection item Standard direction Why it matters
Quartz crucible Reference capability up to 2000°C Common standard platinum configuration; confirm alloy and service life
Zirconia crucible Reference capability up to 2600°C Higher-temperature direction with different cost and handling
Temperature measurement Optional infrared system Reading depends on emissivity, surface condition and setup
Cooling Built-in pump plus matched external circuit Protects coil and power electronics during high-temperature work
Pouring structure Integrated, manual tilting or customized Selected from batch weight, mold and operator position

Temperature measurement and pouring configurations

Platinum equipment has fewer interchangeable structures than ordinary gold furnaces. Only confirmed high-temperature configurations are shown here.

Non-contact infrared measurement can support process observation after emissivity, viewing condition and range are configured correctly.

Configuration, applications and project planning

Standard equipment direction

  • IGBT induction power supply with high-temperature furnace head.
  • Electromagnetic bath movement for more even heating.
  • Cooling pump and safety monitoring according to configuration.
  • Matched quartz or zirconia crucible direction.
  • Optional infrared observation and customized tilting frame.

Project data required

  • Platinum, palladium or full alloy composition.
  • Sponge, powder, scrap or solid feed form.
  • Normal and maximum working batch.
  • Target process temperature and measurement requirement.
  • Mold position, pouring method, voltage and cooling conditions.

Applications

  • Platinum and palladium recycling batches.
  • Precious-metal alloy preparation for casting.
  • Laboratory and production remelting.
  • Preparation of high-temperature feed for downstream processes.
  • Customized larger-batch projects after engineering review.

Process cautions

  • Do not substitute an ordinary gold furnace for platinum service.
  • Crucible choice affects contamination, life and temperature capability.
  • Infrared readings require correct emissivity and a clear viewing condition.
  • High-temperature pouring needs suitable molds, PPE and extraction.
  • Final capacity depends on alloy, charge shape and safe working level.

Frequently asked questions

Can a normal gold melting furnace melt platinum?

Usually not safely or reliably. Platinum requires a dedicated high-temperature power, coil, crucible, cooling and measurement configuration.

Which model is suitable for 5 kg of platinum?

CDO-FM18 is the standard 5 kg direction. Confirm feed form, alloy, crucible, voltage, cooling and pouring method before ordering.

What is the difference between quartz and zirconia crucibles?

They offer different temperature capability, chemical compatibility, cost and service life. Quartz is the common standard direction; zirconia is considered for higher-temperature requirements.

Can the furnace melt palladium?

Yes, suitable palladium and platinum-group-metal applications can be configured after alloy, batch and process temperature are confirmed.

Is infrared temperature measurement exact?

It is useful for non-contact observation, but displayed temperature depends on emissivity, surface condition, dross, viewing angle and instrument setup.

Are larger than 10 kg platinum furnaces available?

Larger projects can be engineered with a suitable power supply, crucible, frame, cooling and pouring structure. They should not be assumed to use the standard compact dimensions.

What utilities are required?

Provide the available three-phase supply, cooling-water quality and flow, ventilation, floor space and mold arrangement so the complete installation can be confirmed.
